This is the new 'It coat' you're about to see everywhere.

Remember when Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears arrived at the 2001 American Music Awards in double denim and left us traumatised for decades after? Well, it seems we all went to therapy to overcome it, because denim is making a massive comeback.

Not that we should be surprised. Since last year, denim clothes have been slowly making their way back into our wardrobes. There was the denim maxi skirt that had us all in a chokehold, then we upgraded to the denim dress, and now everyone is obsessing over denim trench coats.

It makes sense why. Denim is a hugely versatile fabric — it's durable, easy to throw on and can go with many different things. Interestingly, I'd describe the classic trench coat in much the same way, making it a match made in heaven.

So before I get into sharing my favourite ones to shop, here's exactly how to wear one so you don't look like Justin and Britney.

Don't think too hard.

The key to styling a denim trench coat is not to overthink it. Yes, it can feel overwhelming, however, a denim trench is simply a more elevated version of the classic denim jacket.

Before investing in a denim trench, ask yourself these questions:

"What would I wear with a denim jacket?"

"What goes well with my favourite pair of jeans?"

"Denim usually goes with everything. Does the same apply here?"

And to answer that last question, yes, it does. A denim trench coat opens up a world of possibilities. If your wardrobe leans towards neutral shades and simple patterns, then you'll love embracing this new trend.

On the other hand, if you prefer bolder prints and brighter colours, you can effortlessly mix and match the denim trench with pieces you already have in your wardrobe. 

If you're feeling confident, consider pairing the trench with either a denim set or a pair of jeans. Gone are the days when double (and triple) denim are considered taboo. 

You can also style it with leather pants and a striped jumper, or opt for a black mini skirt and white tee. Honestly, there are very few ways to stuff this up. 

Choose the right wash.

Choosing the correct wash is crucial here, and when I say correct, I mean the type of wash that works for you. The best way to figure this out is by pulling out your favourite jeans and buying a trench that matches. 

Personally, I love a dark wash jean and a dark wash trench. It's more appropriate for the cooler months, and it looks clean and chic. 

Pick the right length.

Cropped jackets tend to look dated, which is why I recommended picking a trench that ends right below the knees. 

Not only is it practical, but it will help elongate the body, making the legs and torso appear longer.

It's simple — because it's a fun trend that doesn't take itself too seriously. Regardless of your age or personal style, a denim trench works for everyone, and if taken care of, will last you years.
