Joel and Benji Madden were some of the biggest rock stars in the '00s. Their lives look very different now.

Good Charlotte released their hit single, 'Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous' in 2002.

The song – sung by brothers Joel and Benji Madden – was about the world's obsession with fame and how celebrities aren't appreciative of what they have.

Ironically enough, it set them up for a life with the album it was featured on, The Young and the Hopeless, selling 4.9 million copies, with other multi-platinum records to follow. 

In the years since, Joel and Benji have settled down, married and started families. Here's what their lives look like now.

In 2006, several months after ending his relationship with Hilary Duff (you can read more about that here), Joel Madden – the lead vocalist of Good Charlotte – started dating TV personality, Nicole Richie.

"Meeting Nicole was... like a religious experience," he once told 60 Minutes Australia.

"That’s like a life-changing, cathartic, event... meeting the person you know is going to be your wife."

Joel's initial instinct was correct, with the two tying the knot in 2010. 

Their wedding took place at Nicole's father, Lionel Richie's LA home, with Gwen Stefani, Kris Jenner, Ellen Pompeo and Pete Wentz in attendance – and Benji Madden as best man.

Prior to their nuptials though, the pair had already had two children together – Harlow, born in 2008, and Sparrow, born in 2009.

Now parents to a 16- and 14-year-old, the couple keep their children away from the spotlight, rarely posting photos of them on social media. 

In April 2024, however, the family made a rare red carpet appearance in Los Angeles to celebrate their mum's new film, Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead.

"I would say that Joel is a very shy introvert, who loves life, who enjoys life, who loves music, has such a deep passion for music, and anybody who shares that same passion he will go above and beyond for," Richie said about her husband on 60 Minutes. 

"He is a loyal person, who has the most incredible family values of anybody that I've ever met."

In 2011, Good Charlotte went on an indefinite hiatus. Joel joined The Voice Australia the following year; with Benji joining him in 2015. 

The brothers also started their own music duo, The Madden Brothers, and a music company, MDDN.

But right as they were settling into their new careers, they signed on to produce 5 Seconds of Summer's album and considered getting their own band back together.

"We made the 5 Seconds Of Summer record, and we were really feeling the pop punk vibe again. It was like, 'Should we call the guys up again? It’s been so long.' And everybody was like, 'F**k yeah, let’s do it,'" Benji told Alternative Press.

In 2016, Good Charlotte finally released their highly anticipated sixth album Youth Authority. Richie and their two children starred in one of the music videos.

"I don’t know [if there’s] a secret [to our marriage], other than we love to laugh and have fun," Richie told US Weekly in 2019. 

"It’s nice doing the journey of life together. Doing it with somebody else that has the same goals as you is a really fun way to live."

Since 2022, Joel has hosted American reality TV show, Ink Master.

In 2014, Benji Madden – the lead guitarist and backing vocalist for Good Charlotte – met Cameron Diaz. 

His sister-in-law, Nicole Richie, introduced the musician to the actor; and seven months later, they married.

Diaz admitted she "just knew" the rockstar was going to be her husband the second she met him. 

In August 2019, Diaz wrote an essay for InStyle in which she made a rare declaration about their relationship, calling her husband "the greatest human being".

"Getting married to him was the best thing that ever happened to me," she said.

"My husband’s the best. He's the greatest human being, and he’s my great partner. Marriage is certainly hard, and it’s a lot of work. You need somebody who's willing to do the work with you, because there’s no 60-40 in marriage. It’s 50-50, period. All the time."

Benji occasionally shares loving messages about his wife on social media, and the pair always show their support for each other's business ventures.

When Good Charlotte released its first album in six years in 2016, Cameron shared a rare post on Instagram.

"One of my favourite things about being married is how much pride I take in my husband... one day it might be how generous and giving, another how gentle and thoughtful.

"And [every] single day I am so incredibly proud of his integrity as a human being," she wrote.

Benji's also honoured her in a very permanent way, getting a large tattoo of his wife's name on his chest.

In 2016, Cameron made one of her very few comments about her husband, confessing not one of her exes came close to Benji — including Justin Timberlake and Jared Leto.

"I don't even remember any of that. Like that's the thing, that's how I know he's my husband because no one compares," she told Andy Cohen on Sirius XM Radio.

Despite their individual star power, the couple has managed to keep their relationship very low key; welcoming their first child, Raddix, in 2020.

"We are so happy, blessed and grateful to begin this new decade by announcing the birth of our daughter," Diaz and Madden said at the time.

On March 23, 2024, the couple announced the birth of their second child together, who they named Cardinal Madden. 

"We are blessed and excited to announce the birth of our Son, Cardinal Madden," the pair wrote in a joint Instagram post, adding they would not be sharing any photos of their baby boy. 

"He is awesome and We are all so happy he is here! For the kids' safety and privacy, we won't be posting any pictures — but he's really cute! 

"We are feeling so blessed and grateful. Sending much love from our fam to yours. Best wishes and good afternoon!"
