Donald Trump started waving around a very "secret agreement". We could... see it.

On Tuesday, President Donald Trump wanted everyone to know that he had a very special “secret agreement” (nanananana) and you absolutely do not.

He was proud of his secret agreement. It felt… presidential. Powerful. Like something important that happens in movies about presidents.

“That’s the agreement that everybody says I don’t have,” Trump said. “I’m going to let Mexico do the announcement at the right time.”

But as he stuck his tongue out at all the little people who weren’t allowed to know about the details of his highly confidential and also significant agreement, he maybe a little bit… showed everyone the agreement.

Sir.

Waving the piece of paper around in front of reporters outside the White House, emphasising how very private it was, a Washington Post photographer named Jabin Botsford took a picture of it and precisely three minutes later the whole world had uncovered Trump’s master plan.

“The Government of Mexico will take all necessary steps under domestic law to bring the agreement into force with a view to ensuring that the agreement will enter into force within 45 days,” the agreement read.

“The parties further intend …. an agreem(ent)… to burden-sharing in relation to the processing of refugees…”

While his focus has very much been on Mexican migration, his concern doesn’t actually have any statistical backing. Immigrants coming from Mexico have dropped, while the numbers from Central America are significantly rising.

If Mexico ‘fails’ to curb immigration, then they’ve agreed to become a ‘safe third party’, meaning asylum seekers crossing through Mexico have to apply for refugee status there. Not in the United States or Canada.

Can’t wait for the announcement though, Trump.
