The political breath of fresh air we've been waiting for.

Samantha Moystyn is our new Governor General.

Basically, that means she's The King's representative in Australia and in charge of a range of constitutional and ceremonial duties in our parliament. It also makes her the Commander-in-Chief of the Australian Defence Force. 

She's the second woman to hold the position, and is taking over from the outgoing David Hurley who has been in the role since 2019. 

The Prime Minister has called her a "modern and optimistic leader".

We'd go so far as to call her a breath of fresh air, and exactly the kind of political appointment we need in 2024. 

Because Australian politics has been pretty uninspiring of late. 

Between the allegations of sexual misconduct and gender inequality at Parliament House, Scott Morrison's haphazard and botched COVID-19 plan (alongside his many other scandals), and Albo's failure to get ahead of a spiralling cost-of-living crisis - we needed a win. 

Samantha is that win. 

She's coming to the position of GG from the federal government's Women's Economic Equality Taskforce, and rose to prominence in the business world campaigning for the economic empowerment of women (yippee!).

A quick around-the-grounds on some of her other career accomplishments: she was the first female AFL commissioner and the Inaugural commissioner of the National Mental Health Commission. She was president of Chief Executive Women (a development program for female leaders).

She's a founding supporter and five-year chair of the women’s climate action group 1 Million Women. She's served on the Global Business and Sustainable Development Commission. She's the chair of Beyond Blue, the Foundation for Young Australians, Ausfilm, Australian National Research Organisation for Women’s Safety and Australian Volunteers International.

She's also on the boards of Reconciliation Australia, the Australian Council of Arts, the Sydney Theatre Company and the Climate Council (to name a few.)

In other words; she's a big supporter of climate change policy, women's equality, the arts, mental health support and Aboriginal rights.

She was a leading advocate for the Indigenous Voice to Parliament and according to now-deleted social media posts, she's behind scrapping 'Australia Day' - referring to January 26 as 'Invasion Day' and getting behind the hashtag #AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBe.

In a joint press conference with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announcing her new position, Mostyn introduced herself as Canberra-born and the eldest of four sisters. 

She, "grew up in an army family, our father a Royal Military College Duntroon graduate who served Australia with distinction for almost 40 years, supported by the generosity, love, care and selflessness of our late mother".

She talked about travelling overseas with her dad's job as a child, completing an arts law degree and the values that have shaped her.

"My parents instilled in us the values that they lived so consistently. Generosity, care for others, respect, curiosity, being of service to society and always humility," she said. 

She has spent time listening carefully to single mothers and domestic violence survivors, she's visited men's sheds and packed food boxes in her local community. 

And it's not just that. Support for her is widespread, including from the opposite side of politics. 

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton praised her appointment and said she was "somebody who’s been involved in business and sport for a long period of time and obviously is well known to many people within the government over a long period of time".

Former Coalition PM Malcolm Turnbull said she was "a great choice". 

Her critics call her an "affirmative action hire" and "woke," and fear that she is not "apolitical enough" to be successful in the role of Governor-General.

We call bulls***. 

If supporting women, the environment, First Nations people and mental health is woke then great, we should all be 'woke.' 

How exciting it is to have a woman like Sam in such an important position of power. 

We can't wait to see what she does with it.
